The Positive Effects of Technology

Mar 20, 2023

This just in: technology has had a largely positive impact on society and the world at large. It’s easy to forget when trying to wrangle your kid’s smart phone out of their hands, but technical advancements have benefited daily life in innumerable ways. Just consider how virtual meetings kept us connected and streaming programs entertained us during pandemic lockdowns. Like it or not, the use of technology in everyday lives has become a necessity. It is integral to how we interact, go about our daily activities, work and build relationships.

Modern innovations don’t just enhance lives but in some cases save them. We believe these  are the most overlooked reasons that people should appreciate the upside of technology.

U.S. Adults See More Benefits Than Downsides of Technology

Despite the downsides of technology, most people appreciate that it enables them to engage with the world on a daily basis. They may have legitimate concerns about its use in some cases, but most folks rely on modern technology to conduct their day-to-day lives. According to Pew Research Center, just over half of adults (52%) say technology has had mostly positive effects. Their top reasons are:

  • Easy access to information and communication
  • Positive effects on health and medicine
  • Improvements to people’s jobs
  • Increased access to knowledge

Meanwhile, comparatively few people see tech as a mostly negative force. In the same study, 38% of respondents expressed a mix of positive and negative effects, but only 8% said it has had mostly negative effects on society.

Lifting People Out of Poverty

A laptop can be an invaluable tool for training, literacy and education in places where those things aren’t widely available. In the past, opportunities for economic and social development in many impoverished places around the world have lagged. But internet access alone gives users the opportunity to connect to potential employers and find work online. Mobile phones have also been instrumental in pulling communities out of poverty and expanding horizons in developing nations.

Essential to Modern, Life-Saving Medical Achievements

No one wants surgery. But if you ever need it, aren’t you glad that recent medical innovations are leading to less invasive and more accurate procedures? These types of advancements have transformed the medical industry. In computer-assisted brain surgery, surgeons use technology to create a 3D image of the brain to help guide their operations. Thanks to similar innovations, more than 250 million endoscopies are performed each year around the world. This minimally invasive procedure is widely used on joints and other areas of the body to reduce hospitalizations and hasten recovery times.

Enhancing Both Business & Worker Resilience

People aren’t always conscious of how modern innovations are impacting their lives. But chatbots, an AI technology, were widely used to automate customer service teams during the pandemic. They answered vital medical questions, assessed hospital bed capacities, and distributed public health information.

Many industries, from finance to education to healthcare, have credited information technology for helping them become more resilient in recent years – particularly in AI and data security. An IBM investigation into digital acceleration during the pandemic found that mobile phone technology, cloud computing, and AI were the most influential ITs used by businesses. To this day, cloud technology continues to be indispensable for remote workers to perform their jobs.
