Success Within the Cloud

Patrick Clary, President & Chief Operating Officer at DYOPATH

Committing to a solution can be stressful if you’re not fully informed about the options for your particular challenges. We often emphasize the advantages of a more modern, cloud-based IT infrastructure, but our main goal at DYOPATH is to help organizations grasp just how customizable those services are. That’s what makes success in the cloud possible.

Organizational leaders representing a vast range of industries come to DYOPATH for direction in finding more appropriate solutions. In my last blog, I focused on protecting your assets through Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), both of which have broad implications for productivity.

In one instance, we helped a civil litigation law firm transition to a safer and more adaptable infrastructure with both of those services, providing one of our most compelling success stories to date.

Case Study: How Multiple Cloud Solutions Solved a Common Problem

In an ironic twist, one of the firm’s primary practice areas is technology and internet law. Electronic discovery plays a frequent role in their cases. While they were defending world-class technologies, their outdated infrastructure was causing them a significant loss of productivity – and putting sensitive client data at risk.

Their objective was to protect the security of their clients and reduce the risk of a data breach. It was also essential for the firm to be better prepared for unexpected spikes in usage. They wanted to eliminate any scenario that would cause attorneys to be non-billable due to an IT outage. Our team quickly ascertained that they required a more scalable infrastructure to handle large, fluctuating amounts of data and high volumes of traffic.

The Challenge

Deciding how to resolve  infrastructure problems can be quite difficult for an organization with complex needs, especially in the early stages. They often grasp what is holding them back but are in the dark when it comes to knowing which solution is the best one for them.

Since the law firm in question defends companies that have faced hacks and security breaches, it would be damaging to be a victim of the same. Yet their existing system had a few essential problems:

  1. Aging, outdated infrastructure
  2. Insecure data storage
  3. Insufficient scale and power

Their system left them unprepared and vulnerable. They needed something to ensure their attorneys could access client files, legal research, and other critical information safely, from anywhere at any time.

The Solution in the Cloud

Once the firm explained its situation to the team of specialists at DYOPATH, a strategy was developed to address it. In the end, we employed three distinct cloud sub-services to provide a hybrid cloud architecture in a secure, virtual environment.

As I mentioned above, the first two services we proposed were covered in a previous blog:

Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) – We implemented DRaaS, a cloud-based service, to protect all of their critical applications and data from a potential disaster or service disruption. Doing so enabled the firm to back up its data and IT infrastructure while providing more flexibility for its employees.

Infrastructure as a service (IaaS) – We suggested they move their infrastructure to IaaS, a custom cloud solution, for faster and more reliable service. This enabled the firm to meet and exceed all of the security rules and regulations required of the organization.

Desktop as a Service (DaaS) – Based on our recommendation, their IT department implemented DaaS, which allows associates to securely access all client data from anywhere using their own devices.

Trial and Success

A trial period gave the firm a chance to assess the quality of its new solutions. Using our cloud-based data centers, they successfully backed up their infrastructure. In doing so, they realized they could operate more efficiently as well as store confidential client data in a secure, virtual environment. With DaaS, their employees began accessing systems using personal mobile devices without accumulating any data on them. IaaS improved application performance and security alike.

As a bonus, they met their compliance requirements for a second disaster recovery site. The more scalable infrastructure we provided enables them to handle any amount of data or volume of traffic, without any business interruptions.

But they still maintain control of their systems. The virtual environment we provided works with locally attached printers and scanners and can be centrally managed.
