Snapshot, Replication, Backup

A snapshot is a point-in-time “picture” of the state of a virtual machine’s disk(s). Individual files cannot be retrieved from a snapshot. Replication is the process of copying data from one location to another to maintain a mirrored version of the machine on separate media. A backup is a full copy of the virtual machine’s data and applications, taken while the VM is in a prepared state and usually saved separately.

Do we have to switch our backup software?

Nope. Keep what you’re using. We work with most backup tools out there. Just point your software at our cloud storage and you’re good.

Is this supposed to replace what we're already doing?

It can go either way, honestly. Some companies ditch their old setup and use us for everything. Others keep their local backups and use us as a backup to their backups. Up to you.

Technical Details

What's the actual difference between snapshots, replication, and backups?

Snapshots are quick pictures of your data—useful for point-in-time recovery, but you can’t grab individual files. Replication copies everything continuously in real time. Backups? They’re full restore points. You get complete control over what you save and when.

How does WAN acceleration actually speed things up?

It compresses your data before sending it to the cloud. Less data moving = faster transfers. Your internet connection gets a break too, so you’re not eating up all your bandwidth on backups.

Only works with Veeam, right?

Actually no. We support most major backup platforms. Veeam just integrates especially well with how we’ve built things, but we’re not locked into it.

We use encryption at three stages. Your data gets encrypted on your end before it leaves. Then it’s encrypted during the trip to us. Then it’s encrypted while sitting in our storage. You’re covered the whole way.

Where exactly are you storing our backups?

We have certified data centers spread across six locations in the US. You pick one location or spread your backups across multiple sites if you want extra protection.

Do we control who can access our backups?

Completely. You manage all the permissions yourself. Same level of control you’d have with backups sitting on your own servers.

How fast can we actually get our data back?

Single files? Usually minutes. A whole system restore takes longer depending on how much data you’ve got. For really big restores, we can ship drives to you instead of pushing everything over the network.
